Crestline, Ohio

Crestline, Ohio

Crestline is another great place to watch trains. Located east of my hometown of Bucyrus on the former Pennsylvania mainline, it's where the former Penny's Chicago-Pittsburgh route crosses the former New York Central's Big Four route coming down from Cleveland.

I went railfanning there in August of 1997. I first spent some time at the west end of the yard, at the crossing on State Route 598, but nothing was happening on that side of town. After looking around for a good place to watch trains, I set up at the old Amtrak shelter and caught a northbound intermodal pounding the diamonds.

Afterwards, I headed to the Wiley Street crossing and saw an eastbound Triple Crown train preparing to leave. After another northbound intermodal turned east towards Pittsburgh, the Triple Crown train pulled out with about 80 trailers in tow. I got some decent shots of the couplings between the trailers and then caught the last trailer as the train proceeded east. Afterwards, a lone Geep pulled off the far track and then backed into the yard.

The last time I was at Crestline, the former Amtrak shelter was still standing abandoned at the station platform, one of the last remnants of the route's history of hosting some well known passenger trains, namely the Broadway Limited. A northbound intermodal on the Big Four comes across the diamonds. A couple views of the tower and interlocking at Crestline.
An eastbound train of Triple Crown trailers passes the Wiley Street crossing. A lone Geep pulls off the siding on the west side of town onto the mainline and then backs into the yard.
