Tiffin, Ohio

Tiffin, Ohio

Tiffin, Ohio, is where I attended Heidelberg College, and CSX's Chicago line from Pittsburgh (ex-B&O) is right on the northern edge of campus. It allowed me to do some railfanning when I wasn't studying, and the tracks were in sight from the main dining hall, which always gave me some dinnertime entertainment.

In January 1994, after receiving a new camera for Christmas, I went over to the tracks to do some railfanning. The first train was a westbound mixed freight. Not long afterwards, I saw an eastbound empty coal train and then a westbound loaded coal train.

After the third train, I went out to the Holmes Street crossing on the east edge of town where new grade crossing signals were under contruction. I heard horns to the west, and I caught an eastbound GTW freight.

I then headed back into town and saw some new trespassing signs posted around the closed down tower, which has since been torn down.

In the summer of 1996, I caught an eastbound freight rushing through town.

A westbound CSX freight rounds the curve on the north side of National Machinery. An eastbound CSX empty hopper train rolls past the north side of the Heidelberg College campus. To the left, you can see Brown Hall, one of the residence halls on campus. A westbound CSX coal train rounds the curve on the north side of National Machinery, visible on the right. One of the new grade crossing signals under construction at the Holmes Street grade crossing.
An eastbound GTW freight (probably coming down the old C&O to Fostoria before turning east), comes out the east side of Tiffin, approaching the Holmes Street crossing. While at Heidelberg in Tiffin, the old B&O tower along Railroad Street was still standing. Fortunately, I got a couple pictures of it when I did as it was gone not long after these photos were taken. One of the posted "no trespassing" signs that I saw.
